Rice is the main food of our country. Most of the lands are used under rice cultivation. But Kurigram is a flood effected district. In Aman season, a large area of aman rice field are damaged causes 0f flood water in rainy season. So, flood tolerant varieties (BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11, BINA dhan12) are vary important technology for increasing yield in this area.

SOLIDARITY-IRRI STRASA Project introduced flood tolerant rice varieties at farmers’ field in 400 villages of 45 unions of 9 upazilas under Kurigram district. Its coverage area 500 hectors in this period. 3000 farmers get inputs support for establishing his/her demonstration.

Farmers have mixed impression cultivating the flood tolerance rice. They observed their field and some of them saw that the seedlings of paddy were alive after 18 days in submergence condition, some of them were ruined and some of them have taken care for future observing. More about 80 percent farmers gets benefit that are not destruction their plot and get 1400-1600 kg of rice in each acre.

In this year, the seed of flood tolerant rice have been expansion and farmers grow their crop for seed. Among them 645 new farmers were included in this area who is not involved in flood tolerant rice variety cultivation previously. Considering grain yield and cost reduction, use of stress tolerant rice variety was beneficial to farmers. But farmers opined that they will be more benefitted from this technology. Day by day farmers’ interest is growing to use the technology in their fields. As a result, this technology helps to cover large flood prone area in Aman season and increase production.
